It just takes one idea, one individual to create something larger than themselves. In the case of Berkeley Rose Waldorf School, it took the initiative of several parents who, in 2009, had a dream to create a loving, nurturing environment for their young children based on the principles of Waldorf education, and to locate it in the heart of Berkeley. The school resided on Rose Street, and takes its logo from the hand carved rose on the founding household’s fireplace mantle. Together these parents created a kindergarten focusing on learning through free play, outdoors and in, and through the practices of home life: cooking, cleaning, making things, and through art.

As the school continued to grow, it became apparent that others shared the same desire for play-based and experiential education, and enrollment began to outpace the size of that founding living room!

The school relocated several times and landed on Cedar Street and later Hillegass Avenue in Berkeley. Our first eighth grade graduated in 2021. It wasn’t until 2024 that a group of dedicated parents and Board members found our forever home on Ridgeway Avenue in Oakland.

We’ve put down roots in a friendly, urban community in Oakland dating to the early 1900’s – people relocated here after the 1906 earthquake. We’re surrounded by caring neighbors who stop by on an almost daily basis, “Love what you’ve done with the front garden,” “it’s wonderful to hear the childrens’ laughter again!,” “thank you for creating such a lovely space in the area,” are just some of the comments that we’ve heard.

We are fortunate to have both views of the Oakland skyline and cool breezes in the afternoon that waft over from the Bay. We’re within walking distance of amazing restaurants, shops and small parks. As an added bonus, many of our families live locally and they are now able to walk or ride their bikes to school. As we settle in and become acquainted with our community, it feels good to be a part of a connected residential community. Our intention is to contribute to this community in ways that make a lasting impact.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed large and small to make this dream a reality. Every volunteer hour, every dollar donated, every helping hand has gotten us to 215 Ridgeway. These are values that we want to instill in our children: giving, strength, perseverance, support, stewardship for this land – to name a few. Our new campus feels like a true blessing and we are honored and humbled to feel at home in such a beautiful location and community.
